This week Ps Andre spoke about His Way is… New… Taken from the text of Matt 9:17 where Jesus is questioned about fasting and he answers with, “neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Previously in this story, Matthew the tax collector is called to follow Jesus. They all end up at Matthews home during a day of fasting when the question is asked why His disciples do not fast? More often questions like these are often symptoms of something so much bigger. Something the individual isn’t even aware of. It’s time folks, to remove the weights. Allow the uncomfortable new to shift your foundations of comfort. How do we walk in that freedom continually? Jesus unpacked this idea to not mix the old with the new. If you are feeling stuck, stagnant, unsure if you are where God wants you to be, or you just feel completely comfortable – if nothing changes, nothing changes. When was the last time you did something for the first time?
Jesus did not follow pattern! Traditions, man made laws and rules designed to foster intimacy if adhered to without genuine relationship, build a wall between you and God. Jesus trained his disciples differently – so instead of fasting with the saints, he taught us to feast with the sinners. He was saying, ‘have the right priority’. Don’t just ask for change, wait for it and do nothing. That’s fresh wine, into an old wineskin. Ask for fresh wine, it starts in worship and prayer.
There are people with old wineskin Jobs, faith, expectancy, anointing, preferences – Ask for fresh wine. Where there is new wine, there is power. But to keep it requires embracing change, or even initiating change. Change one thing, keep it simple. Breakthrough is just an uncomfortable first step away.
The new wine is the calling for this season. As God partners with us in this, he gives the wine, we provide the wineskin.
God wants to see you in abundant life, you have been given it, a fresh barrel of it, you need the new wine skin.
